EMK Institute partners with Lott Leadership Institute for first ever remote Senate Simulation

Institute brings its "Senate Immersion Module" program to Ole Miss

OXFORD, MS – The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate partnered with the Lott Leadership Institute at Ole Miss University on Sunday, for the first ever Senate simulation model staged by the Institute outside of our headquarters in Boston. There, 62 public policy students participated in a simulated Senate session on the topic of immigration reform, facilitated by EMK Institute staff.

The Leadership Institute is named after former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss), who served alongside Sen. Kennedy for many years and is also a Member of the Board of Directors at the EMK Institute.

“We here at the Institute are so proud to be able to take our educational programs outside of the walls of the Institute and find new ways to educate about the Senate and inspire the next generation of civic leaders,” said EMK Institute President Jean MacCormack. “We appreciate the warm southern hospitality at Ole Miss and are especially proud to be partnering with the Lott leadership Institute.”

The Institute’s Senate Immersion Module (SIM) is a program that simulates the workings of the Senate in Washington, using negotiation and debate skills to help students of all ages learn about the legislative process. Lott Institute students worked together in groups to create a bill on comprehensive immigration reform, debating amendments, and passing the bill with a final vote of 52 to 12.

This fall the Institute is offering two SIM programs, the Patriot Act, and the Reconstruction Act. The SIM program is free to all Massachusetts student groups, and all interested groups should contact simschedule@emkinstitute.org with questions on how to book a SIM.
