EMK Institute Hosts Young Leaders Network Retreat
2nd annual summer leadership program connects young professionals from around the country for three day seminar on workings of government
BOSTON – This week the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate is hosting 60 Congressional Center and Congressional Office interns for a three-day retreat to culminate the 2015 Young Leaders Network program. Working with New York University’s Brademas Center, University of Massachusetts Boston and others, the Young Leaders Network partners with Congressional Centers from across the country to provide opportunities for young people through a regular summer event series in Washington, D.C.
The retreat will include legislative simulations on Comprehensive Immigration Reform and the Patriot Act, as well as panel discussions on diverse topics including the Senate State Office, National Security and the Art of the Campaign.
“This summer the Young Leaders Network has brought together more than 350 interns from more than 90 Congressional Offices and Congressional Centers from across the country,” said Dr. Bill DeWalt, the Institute’s Museum Director. “We are dedicated to inspiring civic engagement in the next generation of leaders, and we are thrilled to welcome these young leaders to the Institute to have thought-provoking discussions with leaders in public policy, media and government.”
Over the past two years, the EMK Institute and NYU’s Brademas Center for the Study of Congress have partnered with UMass Boston and several Congressional Centers including; The Dodd Center, the Culver Center, the Rudman Center, the Nethercutt Foundation and others to develop the Young Leaders Network.
“We’re thrilled the YLN students are here,” said Ira Jackson, Vice Provost of UMass Boston. “And we’re delighted to be partnering with the Brademas Center, and working hand in hand with the EMK Institute.”
During the 2015 summer luncheon series in Washington D.C. YLN students had the opportunity to hear from elected officials, staff and policy experts including; Josh Bolten, former Chief of Staff to President George W. Bush, Chuck Todd, Host of Meet the Press and several Members of Congress including Rep. Dave Loebsack (D-Iowa) and Martha Roby (R-Ala.)
