Edward M. Kennedy Institute President Dr. Jean MacCormack honored with UMass Dartmouth Leduc Center Community Member Civic Leadership Award

On Thursday, April 20 the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Leduc Center for Civic Engagement recognized Dr. Jean MacCormack, President of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute, with the Community Member Civic Leadership Award. The Award recognizes community members who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to civic engagement, and to advancing the communities of the South Coast and the region. Nominees are judged on the depth and scope of their work’s impact on the community or public policy.

“Jean has been a leader and advocate for civic engagement within the South Coast and greater Massachusetts community throughout her career,” said James Karam, Chairman of the Board of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute. “The Institute benefits every day from her commitment to encouraging civic participation, and I can’t think if anyone more deserving of this award.”

MacCormack joined the Institute as President in 2014, and has lead the Institute through it’s first two years of operation. Prior to her role as President of the Institute, MacCormack served as the Chancellor of UMass Dartmouth for 13 years. During her time as Chancellor she oversaw a major transformation of the school, growing enrollment to 10,000 students and opening the UMass School of Law, Massachusetts first public law school. In addition to her position at the Institute, MacCormack serves as the Chair of the SouthCoast Hospitals Board and is a Director of the Bristol Counting Savings Bank.
