EMK Institute Launches "Across the Aisle" Series with Bipartisan Discussion on Criminal Justice Reform
Institute partners with Coalition for Public Safety for Discussion with Sens. Cornyn, Lee, Booker and Whitehouse
Washington – The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate and the Coalition for Public Safety hosted a bipartisan conversation on criminal justice reform on Tuesday, July 14, featuring four of the leading Senate voices calling for reform: Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), John Cornyn (R-TX), Mike Lee (R-UT), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI). Held in the historic Kennedy Caucus Room in the Russell Senate Office Building, the conversation was moderated by Bill Keller, editor-in-chief of The Marshall Project and former executive editor of the New York Times.
As support in Congress continues building to reform the nation’s criminal justice system, the Senators discussed the need and growing bipartisan momentum for reform, as well as the prospects for congressional action this year.
Victoria Reggie Kennedy, co-founder and president of the EMK Institute’s Board of Directors, delivered introductory remarks at the event.
“Compassion and compromise. Fierce advocacy and tender friendship. Those are the ingredients of the magic sauce that makes the United States Senate the greatest deliberative body in the world,” said Kennedy. “And those are the ingredients we hope to shine a light on in the Edward M. Kennedy Institute’s Across the Aisle series.”
The conversation is the inaugural event of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute’s Across the Aisle series, bringing together government leaders from different political parties who are collaborating on a common cause.
