Welcoming Words

Statue

Welcoming Words introduces young students to an important American symbol, the Statue of Liberty, and the welcome that she represents to immigrants. The program begins with an interactive tour themed for the Institutee’s youngest learners. Students practice passing a bill into a law at the digital exhibit How a Bill Becomes a Law and visit the Institute’s replica Senate Chamber in order to learn more about American democracy.

Then students read Her Right Foot by Dave Eggers, a nonfiction children’s book with a powerful message about the Statue of Liberty and her striding right foot. Participants will discuss how Lady Liberty welcomes diverse neighbors into American communities. Students will then create their own symbols of welcome for new friends using art and collage supplies.

Welcoming Words is recommended for students in grades K-2 and can accommodate up to 50 students. For more information, please contact studentgroups@emkinstitute.org.
