Institute to Convene Oral History Project Discussion on Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland
Discussion to feature keynote address by former Senate Majority Leader and Special Envoy for Northern Ireland, George Mitchell
BOSTON – On Monday, May 16th, the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate will host its first discussion following the September, 2015 release of the Edward M. Kennedy Oral History Project. The conversation will focus on the rich Oral History Project content and transcripts that discuss the Northern Ireland Peace Process, and Senator Kennedy’s involvement during his career.
Her Excellency Anne Anderson, Ambassador of Ireland to the United States, and Mr. Stewart Matthews, First Secretary of Northern Ireland Bureau will deliver welcome remarks.
Senator George Mitchell will deliver an address, and NBC News Capitol Hill Correspondent Kelly O’Donnell will moderate a panel discussion on Senator Kennedy’s involvement in the peace process.

About the Edward M. Kennedy Oral History Project Last September the Institute, in partnership with the Miller Center of the University of Virginia, released the Edward M. Kennedy Oral History Project, an unparalleled resource giving insight into Senator Kennedy’s career in the Senate that spanned nearly five decades and 10 presidential administrations.
The Project began in 2004. The interviews with Kennedy cover a broad range of topics, including his pre-Senate years, relationship with his brothers, rise in the Senate, political style, Senate and presidential campaigns, public causes, and legacy.
In addition to interviews with Kennedy, scholars interviewed others who knew him throughout his life. Interviewees include Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, former Democratic Presidential Candidate Michael Dukakis, Secretary of State John Kerry, Senator John McCain, former Vice President Walter Mondale, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, Theodore Sorensen, speechwriter for President John F. Kennedy, and many others.
About the Edward M. Kennedy Institute Since opening just over a year ago, the Institute has hosted more than 10,000 students from across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and has hosted public programming events in both Boston and Washington, DC that have included speakers from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, to Congressman John Lewis, to Red Sox Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez.
