As historic primary and general elections approach, state legislators to discuss electoral laws and related issues in the Commonwealth during Edward M. Kennedy Institute virtual conversation

Co-chairs of Committee on Election Laws will share insight from topical work on Beacon Hill and statewide

BOSTON – On Friday, July 17, 2020, the Edward M. Kennedy Institute will welcome Massachusetts State Senator Barry Finegold (D-Second Essex and Middlesex) and Massachusetts State Representative John Lawn (D-10th Middlesex), chairs of the Committee on Election Laws, for a conversation about the preservation and expansion of voting in the upcoming primary and general elections.

Moderated by Pam Wilmot, executive director of Common Cause Massachusetts, the discussion will focus on the new Massachusetts law that requires the Secretary of State to have mail-in ballot applications to be sent to all registered voters and expand the early voting timeline for the primary and general elections. These changes come as the Commonwealth continues to fight the coronavirus pandemic in an effort to protect the health and safety of voters while increasing access.

While the Institute’s facility remains closed for the time being, its commitment to civic engagement and civic education is as strong and vibrant as ever. This program marks the Institute’s sixth interactive online offering which will be available both as a live event and as a recorded resource afterward.
