Statement from Victoria Reggie Kennedy on the Passing of Gerard Doherty

Gerard Doherty was a long-time friend of the Kennedy family and his invaluable work in the campaigns of the three Kennedy brothers is legendary. He chaired Ted Kennedy’s first Senate campaign in 1962 and, as my husband always said, Gerry not only seemed to know everybody and everything, but he also had spot-on political instincts. Gerry remained a trusted friend and advisor for the rest of my husband’s life, and I’m proud to say that, for the rest of Gerry’s life, he continued to be my dear and trusted friend as well. I will miss him very much.

From the time I first met Gerry Doherty, I knew he was someone special. I was, of course, influenced by Teddy’s deep trust and affection for his friend, but my regard for Gerry grew to be very personal because of what I saw first-hand – a loving man of uncommon generosity and deep faith; a man of loyalty and purpose; a man who was involved in the issues of the day and always had his finger on the pulse of the people; and a man who loved Charlestown and Malden Catholic, and, of course, his family. In more recent times, I have been deeply moved by his quiet and steady support and belief in the work we do at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute. Gerard Doherty was, quite simply, a man who made a profound difference in the life of our community and our country.

I will miss my friend very much. And I extend my deepest sympathy to his wife Regina and to his loving nephews. We have lost a giant. And we are all better for knowing him.
