Edward M. Kennedy Institute to premiere new education program highlighting citizen influence on United States Senate
First edition to focus on women’s suffrage
BOSTON – On Tuesday, January 21, the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate premieres The Citizen’s Senate education program.
The first installment of the new program is titled The Citizen’s Senate: Women’s Fight for Suffrage. It will examine the struggles and ultimate success of the final decade of the women’s suffrage movement, culminating with the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920.
The Citizen’s Senate program features a combination of narration, historic film footage, and archival images, as well as live performances of speeches in order to highlight key moments in American history when citizens have compelled the U.S. Senate to act. The program will be offered in the Kennedy Institute’s full-scale replica of the United States Senate Chamber.
The January 21 event will include a performance of the program and panel discussion moderated by Roberta Wollons, Ph.D., Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The Citizen’s Senate program is made possible through the generous support of the Barbara Lee Family Foundation and Mass Humanities.

• Roberta Wollons, Ph.D., Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Boston, will serve as moderator for the conversation with panelists.
